Expecting the Unexpected

I’ve written of my daughter’s and my first trip to the Washington coast, but there’s another detail worth mentioning.

In the middle of winter, in the rainiest part of the country, we were given forty eight hours of balmy sun. We’re talking no jackets at Ruby Beach in January; only one of the many times we said out loud, “This wasn’t supposed to happen!”

One week later a huge storm hit the coast destroying bulkheads and businesses; many were hit hard. My new spiritual home was hurting.

Now THIS wasn’t supposed to happen!

Except it was.

Gifts and lessons go hand in hand.

Storms can throw the most unlikely ingredients together. In the chaos, things crash together and settle into new locations. Life torn down, requiring new construction.

Sometimes there’s clean-up to be done, and sometimes we need to say, “This wasn’t supposed to happen!” for a while before we get to work.

Before you do, make sure you don’t like your new mess. Were you really happy with where everything was before? Are you sure things aren’t actually arranged a little better now?

Gifts and lessons.

Sometimes it takes a storm.
